New Mayor Confident About Sligo’s Future

Newly elected Mayor of Sligo Councillor Jonathan McGoldrick has identified the transport network and the city’s amenity areas as key issues for his term. Councillor McGoldrick was elected as Sligo’s first citizen at the Borough Council’s AGM on 18th June.

In his inaugural speech in City Hall, Mayor McGoldrick stated that his objectives for Sligo revolve around the development of Sligo as a key centre for continuing economic growth. ‘I believe the provision of a modern transport infrastructure will be the catalyst for growth and sustainability and that the people of Sligo have every reason to be confident about their City’s future.’

There are a number of key projects the Mayor hopes to see advanced over the coming year.

The Eastern Garavogue River Bridge has been identified as the flagship project which will provide a vital link between our communities North and South of the river. It will also facilitate new traffic management measures in the Eastern areas of Sligo City, as well as reducing traffic congestion generally around the City.

The pedestrianisation of O’Connell Street was a pivotal element of our City’s traffic management plan. Over the coming year, Cllr McGoldrick looks forward to seeing the next stage of this initiative progressed, making Sligo a pleasant and inviting shopping environment for all.

He hopes to maintain the quality of progress and change seen over the last year, in particular the Council’s ambitious plans for parks and amenity areas around the City.

The current programme of works at the Old Swimming Pool, Seaview Drive and Doorly Park have been welcomed by the respective communities.

Acknowledging the high expectations of the Sligo Borough Council, Cllr McGoldrick has no doubt that over the next year the Council will work with vision and ambition, displaying the capacity and the will to deliver for the people of Sligo.
