Urban and Village Renewal

This is part of a six year programme; the overall allocation of funds for the year 2005 was €426,200. This money was divided equally between three chosen villages and a project in the Borough Council. The three County projects were at Strandhill, Bunninadden and Aclare.

Objectives:
  • Liaise with the local community regarding the enhancement of the village.
  • Improve existing facilities or provide new facilities where necessary i.e. paving under grounding of lighting cables, car parking, picnic areas etc.
  • Achieve an increase in the Tidy Towns mark.
Meetings were arranged with the local communities i.e. Tidy Towns Committees, Community Development Associations and local public representatives to collaborate in the production of a project. The work formed part of an overall plan for each village.

2005 Programme

Strandhill
The open public ground opposite the Strand Bar was identified as a priority, together with improvements to the promenade including low level lighting to the sea wall. Landscaping work took place at the Sligo Road entrance and within the village.

Bunninadden
The local development committee’s needs in the village were prioritised. Footpaths in the area of Gormley Villas to the village together with environmental improvements were prioritised.

Aclare
A major issue identified by the Aclare Community Council was the open space area adjoining the river. Major environmental works were carried out to this area of the village.
