Sligo Play Day 2010 a Great Success

13/07/2010 -

Sunday 11th July saw Doorly Park taken over by children and families as part of the National Play Day initiative. National Play Day is promoted by the National Play and Recreation Resource Centre (NPRRC), the key aim of which is to promote traditional games and activities and give all children an opportunity to take part (www.nprrc.ie).

This collaboration between Sligo County Council, Sligo Borough Council, Sligo County Childcare Committee and Sligo Sport & Recreation Partnership saw a collection of events relating to play and sports undertaken in the Doorly Park Playzone. Representatives from the Rugby Club and Sligo Rovers and other coaches were on hand to provide outdoor sporting and play activities that proved that the sun does not need to shine in order to have fun in the outdoors.

For the little ones activities such as arts and crafts and messy play were provided. Face painters provided great artistic work on many a child’s face.

Sligo Library Service organised a story telling event which was very popular with all ages.

As the sun came out, the races began and parents and children participated in the many races from egg and spoon races, wheelbarrow races to sack races.

Mayor of Sligo, Councillor Matt Lyons, in attendance on the day, acknowledged the work of local agencies in organising the participation of Sligo in this national event and welcomed the opportunity given to the children to participate in the many and varied activities available on the day.
