World Harmony Runners Visit City Hall27/03/2009 - Mayor Councillor Veronica Cawley welcomed the participants in the ‘World Harmony Run’ to City Hall and commended the group for their work in advancing the cause of world peace. Now in its third decade, this initiative has been brought to over 140 countries and is acknowledged to be the world’s largest grass roots effort for peace. According to the Mayor ‘The forceful message of the World Harmony Run is that peace is a universal right, not a privilege, and that the universal spirit of goodwill and friendship can help to surmount any obstacles along our way. I think the symbolism of the run is hugely important. By carrying the torch a few steps, we play our part in advancing the cause of peace, and lay the foundation for a better world.’
The Mayor expressed her hope ‘that the example you have set will serve as an inspiration to the wider community. The beauty of the ‘Harmony Run’ is that it embraces every person who wishes to play their part, from experienced athletes to those with more modest levels of fitness and mobility’. The Mayor added a local perspective to the event.. ‘In recent years Sligo has been blessed with new people, new cultures, and I think this has encouraged us to look beyond local concerns and to consider global issues with new insight and renewed hope.’ |
