Anti Litter Initiatives

Anti Litter Campaign

There are four elements in the anti-litter campaign.
  • Education and awareness to prevent litter.
Education, awareness and involvement of local residents is key to preventing and reducing litter and improving the appearance of residential areas.
  • The litter warden pursues and prosecutes identified offenders.
The Litter Warden is responsible for enforcing the Litter Pollution Act 1997- 2009.

Sligo Borough Council has 1 full time litter warden who will issue verbal/written warnings, on the spot fines of €150 and investigate cases of illegal dumping. If you are concerned that individuals are illegally dumping in your area contact the Litter Warden at 071 9114400 in Sligo Borough Council.
  • Street Cleaning
The Roads Department delivers its street cleaning service through a range of measures which include the following:
    • Daily Mechanical Sweeping of City Centre (completed by 9.00am),
    • Weekly Mechanical Sweeping of Primary Access Routes Into Sligo,
    • Litter Bins Emptied Daily,
    • Clean-ups Around Bottle Banks,
    • Removal of Illegal Dumping,
    • Removal of Abandoned Vehicles,
    • Pedestrian Walkways and Car Parks Maintained Daily,
    • Graffiti Removal,
    • Chewing gum Removal
  • Involvement of local residents groups in litter prevention and upkeep of their own areas.
Measures to free Sligo from litter are set out in the Litter Management Plan.

How can you help?

Many people are working extremely hard to combat the problems of litter. The local authority, schools, residents groups and community groups all assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the City. Why not get involved in a clean-up in your own area.

The local authority will assist by providing bags, gloves and litter-pickers.

Please do not litter and do not tolerate those who do.

If you do want to report a litter offence, contact the litter warden at your local authority:
