Welcome to the Parks Section

"Sligo Borough Council Parks Section is a provider and manager of active and passive leisure recreational facilities. Sligo Borough Council are working towards developing quality recreational facilities for Sligo with phase I works - development of Mitchell Curley Park now completed. The development of Forthill Park ( Phase II) and Cleveragh Regional Park ( Phase III) will be the focus for development over the next five year period.
The Parks Department participate in the regulation of proper planning and development with a particular emphasis on protection and enhancement of the environment. We are most disposed to communicating listening and consulting with the citizens of Sligo to create a good living environment."


Roles: -
· Design, construct & maintain recreational facilities including Mitchell Curley Park, Forthill Park, Cleveragh Regional Park
· Provide and design play facilities; participate in the development of Sligo as a Child Friendly City.
· Design, Construct & manage a network of Parks, Open spaces and Civic Spaces.
· Provide professional advice with relation to assessment of planning applications.
· Liase with other professionals to develop and manage road and housing/building schemes using sound environmental and aesthetic criteria.
· Protect, manage, promote & plant trees.
· Protect (enforce legislation), conserve and manage wildlife areas owned by Sligo Borough Council.
· Provide advice on matters relating to trees and the environment.
· Provide Christmas and seasonal displays.
· Manage and improve public swimming pools via the management services of Sligo Regional Sport Centre Ltd

Objectives: -
· Develop an infrastructure of Parks & Open Spaces equivalent and / or better than international standards for parks
· Truly reach the status of a Child Friendly City, and be "Disabled and Aged Friendly" in our Parks and Open Spaces.
· Develop closer ties between the City Council and the Community.
· Establish Sligo as a centre for Arboriculture excellence by fostering and promoting the planting of trees throughout the city each year (ie.-In the planting season November to March)
· Develop urban woodland at Cleveragh Regional Park
· Engender a true respect and appreciation of the natural environment and wildlife among the citizens of Sligo.
