Cranmore Regeneration Information Day
Information Day
|
Residents of Cranmore came out to view the proposals for regenerating their community at an Information Day held by Sligo Borough Council in Abbeyquarter last Wednesday 15th March. The Information Day was organised by Sligo Borough Council’s Project Team to allow the residents see first hand the proposals in the Draft Framework Plan which will form the basis of a submission to the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government later this year. Over one hundred residents attended the Information Day where staff from Sligo Borough Council working on the project were at hand to discuss the proposals and gather feedback from the residents. |

Since the Draft Framework Plan was launched last September at an Open Day held in the Ground of Abbeyquarter Community Centre, staff from Sligo Borough Council have held a series of consultation meeting with residents of Cranmore (both one to one consultations and residents group meetings) to discuss the proposals and get feedback from the Community. “This is still an early stage in the regeneration process as we prepare to present the Draft Framework Plan to the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government for their approval and funding. Consultation has played a key role in the process to date and we will continue to consult with residents of Cranmore during every stage of this process. Feedback has generally been positive to date although it is not always possible to meet everyone’s individual needs in this type of project says Jennifer Murphy, Cranmore Regeneration Project Leader with Sligo Borough Council. The Framework Plan contains key proposals for improving the overall image of the estate and impact positively on the quality of life for residents living there”
The Draft Framework Plan contains a number of significant proposals for regenerating the Cranmore Estate which has been developed by Sligo Borough Council’s Architects Department in consultation with the Cranmore Community over the past eighteen months.
In developing the Draft Plan, the Project Team engaged with the Community to identify the issues and problems to be addressed in the Framework Plan. Issues highlighted during the consultation process included; lack of adequate recreation & play facilities for children and young people, lack of adequate Community facilities, the image of the estate, inadequate car-parking and Community safety and security issues. The Draft Plan includes key proposals to impact positively on these issues such as
• Providing quality homes in Cranmore through an extensive refurbishment scheme and encouragement of home ownership through the provision of private & affordable housing and through the promotion of the Tenant Purchase Scheme.
• The creation of smaller neighbourhoods each with its own identity and sense of place
• The provision of a flagship Neighbourhood Centre facility in Cranmore to serve the needs of the Cranmore Community
• The provision of adequate play and recreation space and facilities
• The elimination of alleyways and rat runs throughout the estate and the redevelopment of under-used open space which have been prone to abuse and antisocial behaviour,
• Upgrading of parking facilities for residents of Cranmore.
The Draft Framework Plan will be presented to the Steering Committee on 21st March and to Members of Sligo Borough Council in April before it is submitted to the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government for approval and funding. Following the meeting with the Department the next step in the process will be to focus on developing the designs and details of the Plan in consultation with the Cranmore Community.
