Proper Waste Management doesn’t just mean recycling and composting. There are also steps we can take to ensure that the waste isn’t created in the first place. Waste Minimisation and Prevention are recognised as the most desirable solutions and below we have listed a few simple ideas you can implement at home or at work.
Avoid excessive packaging. Many products now come with layers of plastic. There are more environmentally friendly alternatives.
Choose products packaged in materials that can be easily recycled, e.g. glass and tin. Avoid plastic when possible.
Modern lifestyles have resulted in many disposable products. Choose more durable products that will last. Typical examples would include cutlery, napkins, and razors.
Buy loose fruit and vegetables where possible. Many supermarkets offer pre-packed vegetables. Avoid these and you will avoid the polystyrene.
When shopping, leave extra packaging behind. Typical examples of excessively packaged products would include electrical equipment and shoes.
Compact bulky items like milk cartons before you put them in the bin.
When shopping pay more attention to the products you buy and choose environmentally friendly alternatives e.g. toilet roll made from recycled paper.
