Sligo Kerbside Recycling

Just as the name suggests, Kerbside Collection is a door-to-door collection of recyclable materials. Clear plastic ‘Recycling Bags’ are available for sale to householders into which clean, dry, mixed recyclable materials can be placed. The recycling bags are then collected from your doorstep by a Kerbside Collection operator who will sort, grade and bale the materials so they can be sent for recycling.

A dry recyclable kerbside collection commenced in Sligo Town in January 2003. This pilot initiative within the Borough Council is aimed at increasing recycling levels and diverting recoverable waste away from the landfill.

The trial project covers Markievicz Heights,Heatherview Upper and Meadowvale Estate, which includes a total of 160 households. Through this scheme specified dry recyclable materials can be picked up from the householders front door at a cost of €1.50 per recycling bag.

This scheme has now been rolled out across all of Sligo Town and to Rosses Point, Strandhill, Ballisodare and Collooney

Materials accepted are as follows;

  • NEWSPAPERS - clean & dry.
  • CARDBOARD – dry & flattened.
  • PLASTIC BOTTLES - washed & squashed.
  • BEVERAGE CANS – washed & squashed.
  • STEEL FOOD CANS – scrubbed clean & dry.
  • MAGAZINES - Clean and Dry
  • TETRA-PAK - Wash and Flatten

Upon collection all materials are brought to licensed depots for further separation, baling and transfer to the end markets. The quality of materials collected must be high, to ensure that the different components of the recycling bag can be accepted for recycling.

Full bags of recyclables are collected fortnightly and this collection operates as a separate service from the weekly general refuse collection.

Contact Waste Disposal Sligo (071 9143037), Bergin Waste Disposal LTD (0907) 60807 or the Local Authority to find out the kerbside collection day for your area.

120L Recycling bags are available in many local shops. Contact the waste disposal operator for details.
