Sligo Green Schools

Sligo Borough Council encourages ALL schools in Sligo City to become involved in the Green Schools Campaign. To date, two schools have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag in Sligo City.

1. Our Lady of Mercy N.S., Pearse Road, Sligo. 2. Summerhill College, College Road, Sligo. These schools comply with the best environmental practices and have to be congratulated for their fine work and efforts at promoting environmental awareness!

Our Lady of Mercy N.S.

Here are some ways that Sligo Borough Council assists schools to The Green-Schools Programme.

  • Donates a compost bin, free-of-charge to all schools that are registered in the Green Schools programme.
  • Awards €100 to each school that is presented with the Green Flag.
  • Disseminates information and give talks to students on recycling, litter and composting.
  • Hosts an annual Green-Schools Seminar to offer advice & assist schools towards Green-Flag status.
  • Promotes and organises events in schools for National Wildflower Week, National Tree Week, National Recycling Week and National Spring Clean.
  • Offers competitions to students highlighting environmental awareness e.g. Design Anti-Litter Posters.
  • Offers grant aid for ‘Anti-Litter’ projects under the Anti-Litter Awareness Grant.
  • Seeks applications for funding under the ‘Environment Partnership Fund’ offered by the Department of the Environment and Local Government.
Innovative environmental awareness initiatives like vermi-composting (worm composting ), a butterfly project, declaring the school a ‘Litter-Free Zone’, recycling and composting are just some of the projects schools in Sligo have implemented to gain Green School status.
