The overall rate of compliance for all public water supplies and public group
water schemes tested in Sligo during 2005 was 98.8%. This exceeds the national
average. The figures were published in ‘The Quality of Drinking Water in Ireland
Report’, which was published on 25 January 2007 by the EPA, (relating to
Drinking Water Quality for the year 2005).
Sligo County Council has a statutory obligation and is committed to providing a
potable water supply to the public, which complies with the requirements of the
EC (Drinking Water) Regulations, 2000. In this regard, Sligo County Council
carry out an established programme of monitoring for each of the Council’s
Public Water Supplies and all of the larger Group Water Schemes in the County to
ensure compliance with the standards set down in the Regulations. In addition,
independent monitoring of drinking water supplies is carried out by the Health
Service Executive.
In order to ensure the quality of the supplies, the monitoring which is carried
out in Co. Sligo is actually in excess of the basic requirements of the
Regulations.
The most important indicators of drinking water quality in Ireland are the
microbiological parameters, and in particular E. Coli. In 2005, all Sligo’s
Public Water Supplies and Public Group Schemes, were 100% compliant for this
parameter.
Seven out of the thirteen Private Group Water Schemes monitored, did not meet
the required standard for E. Coli during 2005. However, eleven of these schemes
were provided with treatment in 2006 and this has already resulted in
significant improvement in water quality results for these private schemes.
