As part of the continuing process of implementing Sligo Borough Council’s Traffic Plan for Sligo city centre and the Borough Council’s on-going commitment to this process, further changes will be made to traffic flows within the city centre with effect from Monday 18th September 2006.

Sligo Borough Council’s overall plan for the management of the city’s traffic will contribute to the easing of traffic congestion and conflict particularly in the city centre. The overall plan includes the introduction of pedestrian only and pedestrian priority streets and will include major cityscape environmental improvement works.

Recently, many improvements to traffic flows and to the city centre environment have been implemented including the completion of the Inner Relief Road, the pedestrianisation of O’Connell Street along with several other amendments to traffic flows. Sligo Borough Council is continuing to monitor and manage traffic flows around the city and will make further adjustments to traffic arrangements where necessary.

From 8.00am on Monday 18th September 2006 further changes to traffic flows come into operation and motorists should familiarise themselves with these:-

  • Connolly Street made one way South (towards Mail Coach Road & Temple Street).

  • Burton Street traffic must now stop and yield to traffic coming from Old Market Street.

These new changes will further support and enhance the changes already made within the city and will encourage and promote greater pedestrian activity in Sligo city centre. Sligo Borough Council would like to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation over the last number of weeks and trust that the citizens of Sligo will continue to participate in this evolving process- the purpose of which is to make Sligo a more prosperous and enjoyable place for us all to live & work in, and of course in which to walk and drive around!
