Proposal to Pedestrianise O'Connell Street

New traffic arrangements are being introduced to Sligo City in summer 2006 which will greatly enhance the ‘shopping experience’ by eliminating traffic from the city centre area. Other changes to traffic flows are being introduced to regulate the movement of traffic around the city.

The date provisionally planned for the pedestrianisation of O’Connell Street is August 15th, 2006.

  • O’Connell Street and Tobergal Lane will become pedestrian only with access for deliveries proposed from 08:00am to 11:30am. No vehicular access outside these hours.

  • When open for servicing – proposed flow on O’Connell Street to be one-way from North to South with entrance at Post Office end and exit onto John Street – opposite to current flow direction.

  • The Parks Department of Sligo Borough Council are planning to introduce new street furniture and planters onto the street during August/September to improve street appeal and attractiveness.

Further changes are proposed to traffic flows in City Centre during July:-

  • Old Market Street one way south

  • No exit from JFK Parade onto Thomas Street

  • Improve junction capacity at “Veritas Corner” of John Street and Adelaide Street. Alterations include introducing a left turn slip lane and green left turn arrow for traffic approaching junction from the south.

Sligo Local Authorities Communications Office is initiating a publicity campaign to inform the public of the proposed pedestrianisation and resulting traffic flow changes. Regular updates will be available on www.sligoborough.ie and maps/details of new traffic arrangements will be circulated.
