CONSULTATION ON NEW HERITAGE PLAN
Sligo County Council is seeking the views of the
public in the preparation of a Heritage Plan for the county. The views of all
the community are important, and so an extensive public consultation process is
planned. Submissions are invited until 31st May 2006 from members of the public,
schools, community groups, tidy towns groups…. in fact anyone who has an
interest in the heritage of the County! We hope to ensure that the Heritage Plan
will represent the views of all the people of Sligo.
A series of information sessions and workshops
on the Heritage Plan will be held throughout May, starting in the Sligo Park
Hotel on Saturday 13th May from 9.30am – 12.00 noon. The sessions will also be
hosted in Grange on 18th May, Ballymote on 23rd May and Easkey on 30th May. (See

GOLDEN ERA OF CEILI MUSIC
‘The Golden Era of Ceili Music and Dance, 1955 –
1970’ is the title of a presentation which will
take place in Tubbercurry Community Library on
Wednesday May 10th at 8pm. The presentation will
be given by Mr. Brian Lawler who founded the
Ardellis Ceili Band.
Brian’s first broadcast on Irish National radio
with the Ardellis Ceili Band was in 1957 when he
was only twenty years of age. Ceili Music and
Ceili Dancing was very popular all over Ireland
at this time and the Ardellis was one of the
most popular Bands in the country. The Band
performed regularly on the two most popular
National Radio Programmes namely “Take the
Floor” and Ceili House.
MAKING CONNECTIONS
Over the last few months, Sligo Local
Authorities have fostered links with communities
all over the world. Guests from as far afield as
Pakistan, China and Norway have been hosted by
the Sligo Local Authorities, and in the current
month visitors from Kempten, Germany and Crozon,
France will be in Sligo for ‘twinning’
celebrations with our sister cities. Sligo has
been twinned with Crozon for 25 years, Kempten
for 15 years. Last month Mayor Rosaleen O’Grady
led a delegation to Tallahassee to mark the
tenth anniversary of our association with the
Florida state capital.
CELEBRATING CREATIVITY IN OLDER AGE
The month-long Bealtaine festival promotes the
participation of older people in their community
through artistic expression. The festival takes
place in May of each year, and aims to promote
the participation of older people in the arts.
The Sligo County Arts Office collaborates with
the Heath Service Executive, the Model Arts and
Niland Gallery, the Hawkswell Theatre and many
community and voluntary groups in organising
this arts festival.
The festival is being launched today (Wednesday)
by Mayor Councillor Rosaleen O Grady in the
Clarion Hotel Sligo, and events will take place
throughout the month in Sligo city and in
Cliffoney, Skreen, Enniscrone and Gurteen.

that has strongly affected both European and
American history. An exhibition entitled ‘Early
emigrant letter stories’ is currently running at
Tubbercurry Community Library. The exhibition,
which displays some of these letters, emphasizes
and compares emigrant letters from a number of
European countries and a number of similarities
