The Sligo Inner Relief Road was completed and opened in September 2005. One of
the main purposes of the Sligo Inner Relief Road is to relieve traffic
congestion and conflict particularly in the City centre and allow major
environmental improvement works to take place through the introduction of
pedestrian only and pedestrian priority streets including cityscape
environmental improvement schemes. An overall objective is to eliminate through
traffic passing along core commercial city centre streets and encourage through
traffic to use a circulatory route around the centre including Sligo Inner
Relief Road. Core city centre streets such as O’Connell St, Castle St, Grattan
St, John St, Market St, and High St can then be traffic calmed or
pedestrianised. This will greatly improve their attractiveness to shoppers and
tourists and greatly improve business.
Now that the first part of this overall plan i.e. the opening of the Sligo Inner
Relief Road, is in place and has had a period to ‘bed-in’, it is proposed to
proceed with the following changes to traffic flows during July and August:
From 31st July:
From 15th August:
-
O’Connell Street and Tobergal Lane will become pedestrian
only with access for deliveries proposed from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. Access to
be made from Northern Post Office end only. No vehicular access outside
these hours.
-
Subsequent to the Pedestrianisation of O’Connell Street,
Sligo Borough Council, Parks Department will introduce new street furniture and
box planters to improve the attractiveness of the street. Plans are also being
prepared for a major environmental improvement scheme for O’Connell Street
similar to Shop Street in Galway and Grafton Street, Dublin.
It should be noted that the Pedestrianisation of O’Connell
Street and traffic calming of surrounding streets and subsequent environmental
enhancements is considered a major and critical project in improving the
attractiveness of Sligo city centre and is a key project in the growth of Sligo
as a gateway city.
