Involving community in Heritage is the focus of a suite of funding opportunities
announced by Sligo County Council.
Heritage Officer, Siobhán Ryan, said that ‘there are a number of measures now in
place to encourage heritage activity within the County’. Funding opportunities
are available under the following Heritage Grant Schemes in 2007 and the
Heritage Office of Sligo County Council is inviting applications for projects to
be carried out during 2007.
1. Conservation Grants for Protected Structures.
This scheme is designed to assist owners of protected structures to undertake
necessary work to secure the conservation of the building. It is not intended to
assist with routine maintenance, alterations or improvements. The grant scheme
applies to protected structures both in the county and borough areas. Some of
the successful projects which were undertaken under this scheme in 2006 include
the following;
St. John’s Cathedral, John St., Sligo, St. Mary’s Presbytery, Temple St., Sligo
and Annaghmore School House, Collooney, Co. Sligo.
2. Community Heritage Grants Scheme.
The purpose of the Community Heritage Grants Scheme is to involve the community
in heritage and to support community based heritage activity in County Sligo. In
providing support to these groups Sligo County Council seeks to promote
interest, education, knowledge and pride in the local heritage resource.
Some of the projects which were grant aided in 2006 include the Moygara Castle
Research Project which resulted in an historical survey of Moygara Castle,
Kilmactigue Graveyard Committee who carried out graveyard memorial recording,
Ballymote Youth Steering Group which involved the local children in the
production of a book on the local townlands, and Skreen Dromard Community Summer
Group who researched and built nesting and feeding boxes for native birds.
3. Heritage in Schools Scheme 2007
The Heritage Council together with the INTO operates the Heritage in Schools
Scheme which offers a panel of heritage specialists who will, at the request of
a teacher, visit a primary school to work directly with the children.
Some of the twelve schools in Sligo who took part in 2006 includes; Scoil
Ursula, Strandhill Road, Sligo, Leaffoney N.S., Kilglass, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo,
High Park N.S., Skreen, Co. Sligo and Scoil Pádraig Naofa, Ballyweelin,
Ballinfull, Co. Sligo.
In the promotion of the scheme in County Sligo, the Heritage Office will be
sponsoring a number of school visits under the scheme during 2007 and
applications from primary schools in County Sligo are now being accepted.
