Definitions
There is a legal obligation for all Local Authorities to hold meetings. The Local Government Act 2001 stipulates the requirements surrounding the holding and composition of meetings. The meetings are as a rule held in the Council Chamber City Hall, Sligo.

- Special Meetings
- Budget Meetings
- General Purpose Meetings
Annual Meetings
Where members select from their number the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the coming year.This meeting must be held in the month of May or June each year.
Ordinary Meetings
Where the everyday business of the Council is conducted and follows the Agenda prepared. Held on the first Monday of each month at 8p.m.except where this day falls on a bank holiday when it is moved to the second Monday at the same hour.
Special Meetings
Where members conduct business for which the special meeting has been convened.
Budget Meetings
Where members put in place the budget for the coming year.
Held during a period prescribed by the Minister in Regulations for that purpose.

General Purpose Meetings
The General Purposes Meeting of the Borough Council is convened to discuss planning issues relating to Sligo Borough and other general items which arise from time to time.
