Parking Permits and Discs

Residents Parking Permits

A Residents Parking Permit is a permit that can be obtained from Sligo Borough Council for residents who reside in areas where pay and display/disc parking is operated.  An application form and accompanying documentation must be submitted to Sligo Borough Council and whereby the council is satisfied, the information is correct a permit will be issued for an annual fee.  Applications will only be accepted from the person who wishes to obtain the permit and only if the form is fully completed and accompanied by all required documentation.  Sligo Borough Council reserves the right to ask for additional information to support applications or renewals.  Only one permit is allowed per applicant.

Possession of a Residents Parking Permit does not guarantee the holder a public parking space.  A Residents Parking Permit does not authorise parking in a prohibited manner or place.  A Residents Parking Permit is only valid for the vehicle and street/s indicated on the permit.

Documents Required When Applying for a Residents Permit

When submitting a Residents Parking Permit Application or Renewal, please ensure that you have all of the documentation listed below.
  • Completed Application Form
  • Valid Driving Licence 
  • Vehicle Licensing Certificate 
  • Proof that Vehicle is Currently Taxed
  • Current Certificate of Motor Insurance 
  • If you live in Rented Accommodation, you must submit your current signed 12 month Tenancy Agreement (We do not accept Rent Books or letters from Landlords as proof of tenancy)
  • If you are living at a property which you neither own or rent (e.g. your parents house), a Bank, Credit Card / Credit Union Statement, Income Tax Certificate or a current domestic Utility Bill in your name for the address for which the permit is being sought is required Visitor Parking Permit
Visitor Parking Permits may be issued by Sligo Borough Council to a resident in a pay & display area subject to the production of acceptable evidence in respect of their residency i.e. current copy of utility bills, financial statements, tenancy agreement or other documentation, (ESB, Bord Gais, Eircom, NTL Bill / Bank, Credit Card, Credit Union Statement) showing the resident’s name and address.

The issue of permits shall be at the discretion of the Borough Council and the total number of parking permits for visitors which may be issued to each resident or applicant is 52 in any 12 month period subject to an overall limit of 104 permits per housing unit.

It is the responsibility of the resident to ensure that the Visitor’s Parking Permits are only used by a person who visits / calls on / makes a stay with the resident or is engaged by the resident to carry out works on their dwelling.  It shall be an offence for a resident to sell or otherwise dispose of a Visitors Parking Permit to a person other than a visitor, as defined in the Car Park Bye-Laws 2010 and Parking Places Bye-Laws 2010.

Sligo Borough Council will cancel and withdraw or refuse to renew any Resident’s Parking Permit or Visitor Parking Permits where it establishes that the permit holder has obtained the permit by inaccurate information or documentation being supplied.

Possession of a Visitor’s Parking Permit does not guarantee the holder a public parking space.  Parking spaces on your street are not reserved.  

Carers Parking Permit

Sligo Borough Council will cancel and withdraw or refuse to renew any Carer’s Parking Permit where it establishes that the permit holder has obtained the permit by inaccurate information or documentation being supplied.

A maximum of two Carers’ parking permits may be issued by the Borough Council to a resident for non-resident family member(s)/nominated person(s)/Carer(s) who act as voluntary carers for a resident in a pay and display area and who requires on-going care for a chronic illness.  Parking permit shall be valid for a period of one year from the date of issue.  

A Carer’s Parking Permit does not authorise parking in a prohibited manner or place.  Possession of a Carer’s parking permit does not guarantee the holder a public parking space. Parking spaces on your street are not reserved.  

Contractors Permit

Contractors working on developments within the city may obtain a Contractors Parking Permit.  This permit has a weekly fee, which is subject to change in the Bye-Laws.  This permit provides parking for one vehicle at the proposed development site.  This permit also requires documentation to be provided along with the application (Vehicle Licensing Certificate for the vehicle for which the permit will be issued and also proof that the vehicle is currently taxed) 

A Contractors Parking Permit does not authorise parking in a prohibited manner or place.  A Contractors Parking Permit is only valid for the vehicle and street/s indicated on the permit

Annual Permit

An Annual Parking Permit may be obtained by all members of the public to enable them to park in either a long stay or short stay car park for the duration of one year.  This permit has an annual fee, which is subject to change within the Bye-Laws.  This permit also requires documentation to be provided along with the application (Vehicle Licensing Certificate for the vehicle for which the permit will be issued and also proof that the vehicle is currently taxed) 

An Annual Parking Permit does not authorise parking in a prohibited manner or place.  An Annual Parking Permit is only valid for the vehicle and car park schedule indicated on the permit.

Monthly Permit

A Monthly Parking Permit may be obtained by all members of the public to enable them to park in either a long stay or short stay car park for the duration of one month.  This permit has a monthly fee, which is subject to change within the Bye-Laws. 

A Monthly Parking Permit does not authorise parking in a prohibited manner or place.  A Monthly Parking Permit is only valid for the car park schedule indicated on the permit.

The issue of permits shall be at the discretion of Sligo Borough Council.
