Sligo Borough Council’s Environment Services Co-ordinator, has responsibility for the promotion of Environmental Awareness in Sligo City. The main focus of the Environment Services Co-ordinator work has been the promotion of environmentally responsible management of household waste including recycling and composting initiatives. Other areas being priorities include litter prevention and community environmental projects.

Under Section 10 of the Litter Pollution Act, 1997-2003, Local Authorities are required to adopt Litter Management Plans for their functional area.  The purpose of this plan is to improve the Litter status of the City of Sligo.
