Library Objectives

• To act as the principle branch library within the County Library branch structure and to actively promote itself as such 
• To provide and maintain a comprehensive adult and juvenile lending library service to the community of Sligo and its hinterland. 
• To act as a focal point for community activity in the areas of culture, heritage and education through the use of exhibitions, activities, cultural events, etc. 
• To provide a permanent and accessible storage and retrieval point for reference material and the County Archive. 
• To liase with other institutions and individuals involved in the provision of cultural heritage, information and education.
• To adopt and make available, the latest information technologies in both administrative and public domains.  

Sligo County Library acts as a centre for lifelong learning through the provision of:-  

• An up to date Reference Library, 
• Primary School Service, 
• Internet Facilities, 
• Services for the Visually Impaired, 
• Genealogical Research Material, 
• Local Studies Collection, 
• Yeats Reference Library, 
• Local Authority Archives, 
• Local Publications. 
• In house publication of Books, Guides and CD-Roms. 
• Promotion of Reading and Cultural Activities for All.

Sligo County Library Archives and Administration:

Objectives

• To act as the administrative centre for the network of Branch Libraries in County Sligo.
• To provide the Central Storage capability for the Local History and Archival Collection.
• To act as a repository for the Reserve bookstock.
• To maintain and update the local studies collection, by purchasing and acquiring, any written material either in manuscript or print formats, photographs posters, maps, estate records, archives etc. of particular local interest. 
• To maintain and develop the Schools Library Service through the introduction of a Teachers Resource Facility and the improvement of the Mobile Schools Service to all primary schools. 
• To act as a centre for Outreach Activities and Mobile Library Services e.g. service to housebound, hospitals, rural communities and targeted groups etc. 
• To encourage the development of Information Technology within the County Library service.  

Sligo County Library Archives: Objectives Reference and Local History Library

Editions of the ‘Sligo Champion’ are now available on micro film for the years 1835-1959. The aim of the micro filming project is to make available the newspapers in a format that can be more easily stored and accessed without damage to the original that constant use causes.
