2007 has been designated as ‘European Year of Equal Opportunities for All’ by the EU Council and European parliament. The purpose of which is to highlight a concerted effort to encourage, promote and develop equality and respect for diversity and to remove discrimination in all the EU countries. Sligo Local Authorities supports and endorses equal opportunity for all and provides a broad range of services o many diverse groups within the community. Sligo Local Authorities Equality Action Team organised a Cultural Diversity Day in Sligo on June 22. which was aimed to focus on the cultural diversity in real terms of the actual life experiences of individuals coming from communities that are very culturally diverse from our communities here in Sligo.

The event itself looked at different experiences, realities and life stories of some members of the Polish, Kurdish, Iranian, Pakistani and African groups. It also focused on the issues that arise from their different experiences as asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants to Ireland and to Sligo.
