Sale of Electrical and Electronic Goods



Under the Waste Management (Electrical and Electronic Equipment ) Regulations 2005 retailers of Electrical and Electronic Goods are required to take back WEEE from members of the public free-of-charge. 

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) must never be placed in your waste disposal or recycling bins.  WEEE is taken back free of charge at electrical retail outlets on a one-for-one like-for-like basis.  Recycling centres also accept WEEE free of charge.

Retailers’ obligations under above Regulations are to:

  1. Register with their Local Authority by the 31st January each year.
  2. Provide free in-store take back of household WEEE on a one-for-one basis on the sale of a new like product
  3. Ensure that any WEEE collected are delivered to an approved collection facility.
  4. Ensure that the storage and transport of WEEE collected as above meets the requirements of the Regulations.
  5. Ensure that private households are informed of the WEEE take back facilities available to them and that they are encouraged to participate in the separate collection of WEEE.
  6. Where prices of items are displayed there must be a "three point" display i.e. Retail price, the EMC and price less the EMC.
