Launch of CCTV Scheme in Sligo

Sligo Borough Council had the official launch of a new community based CCTV scheme at City Hall on Wednesday 23rd July. The Scheme is being implemented in the Cranmore and Forthill areas of Sligo.  It is envisaged that the CCTV scheme will:

  • Assist in the maintenance of public order and safety.
  • Assist in the prevention, detection and investigation of offences.
  • Assist in the prosecution of offenders.

The Garda Siochana as partners in the scheme will also have access to a visual monitoring system.

Sligo Mayor Councillor Veronica Cawley welcomed the CCTV scheme emphasizing the important role the local communities played in bringing the project to fruition. Mayor Cawley also stressed two important points in regard to the operation of the CCTV scheme. Firstly, the operation of the system will be in full compliance with data protection legislation with adequate signage in place in the areas being monitored.

Secondly, access to the monitoring and recording station is strictly limited to designated personnel who have obtained garda authorization. Mayor Cawley concluded by commending the local communities, RAPID, Sligo Borough Council and the Gardai for their work in the planning and delivering this project.

The funding for this project comes under the community based CCTV scheme, which is administered by Pobal on behalf of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The Scheme will be operated in strict compliance with Data Protection legislation.
