Sligo Peace Keepers Honoured

Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea has unveiled a memorial at Doorly Park to honour three members of the Defence Forces from Sligo who were killed in service abroad with the United Nations.  The ceremony was tended by the Mayor of Sligo Councillor Jonathan McGoldrick, the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Seamus Kilgannon and the Army Chief of Staff, General Dermot Earley.

The names of Private Manix Armstrong, Private Thomas Walsh and Corporal Dermot McLoughlin have been inscribed on a monument which was crafted to represent the United Nations symbol. The project was a joint initiative between the Defence Forces and the Sligo Local Authorities; The monument was funded by the Department of Defence through the ‘Per Cent for Arts’ Scheme, and the site was donated by Sligo Borough Council.

In his address, Mayor Jonathan McGoldrick said ‘In honouring the three soldiers who gave their lives in the cause of peace, we also reflect on the enormous contribution made by our army personnel at home and abroad. Irish forces have earned a deserved reputation for bravery and professionalism that has preceded them wherever duty has called. I see the monument as a fitting testament to the valour and commitment of these men, and will serve as a focal point both for their families and the wider community to honour their memory.’ The Mayor also commended Senator Marc McSharry and Captain Gerry Casey for their work on the project.

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Seamus Kilgannon stated that ‘Army personnel have served their country with pride and distinction, and have been a welcome and re-assuring presence in some of the world’s most difficult areas.’  The Cathaoirleach also paid tribute to artists Jackie McKenna and Seamus Dunbar, who have deigned a fitting memorial to our brave soldiers who have represented their country with grace, dignity and courage.’
