Mayor Welcomes Water Conservation Campaign

Sligo Local Authorities are finalising plans for a major Water Conservation programme which is aimed at helping people monitor and reduce the amount of water they use in their homes, businesses, farms and schools. The launch will be held at Sligo County Council offices on Friday 9th May, and will be attended by representatives of local businesses, farming community, schools and the Group Water Scheme Sector. Mayor Councillor Jonathan McGoldrick, Leas Cathaoirleach Councillor Martin Baker and Duncan Stewart (of RTE’s Eco-Eye) will be in attendance.

Mayor Councillor McGoldrick feels the launch of the water conservation campaign ‘will focus people’s attention on his hugely important topic, and there are measures we can adopt in the home, business school or on the farm which will can result in a substantial reduction in water usage.’

 WATER FACTS AND FIGURES

• Sligo Local Authorities collect, clean and deliver 38 million litres of water a day to homes, schools, businesses and farms

• We each use on average 150 litres (33 gallons) of clean treated
water every day

• A running tap can use up to 10 litres (2.2gallons) of water a minute

• A dripping tap can waste up to 40 litres (b.8gallons) of water a day

• A leaking ball valve in a water trough can waste up to 150m3 (33,000 gallons) of water per year

WATER SAVING TIPS FOR THE FARM

• Use dry-cleaning techniques when removing solid waste from yards and pens before they are cleaned with water

• Consider using alternative sources of water, such as rainwater.
Rain collected from roofs of farm buildings can be re-used for a number of activities, including washing down yards.
