2009 World Rally Comes to Sligo

Cathaoirleach Welcomes Rally to Sligo

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Jude Devins has welcomed the World Rally Championship drivers, organisers and supporters in Sligo. ‘This a flagship event for Sligo, and it is a tribute to all involved that Sligo has once again been selected as a venue for a rally stage.’

The Cathaoirleach continued ‘We proved in 2007 and will prove again this weekend that we have the capacity, drive and ambition to host major sporting events, and this event provides another welcome opportunity to promote our county’s many attractions to a global audience. The abiding memory of the 2007 Rally stage was the pride the people of Sligo showed towards the event, and everyone played their part to ensure it was an unqualified success.’

‘Particularly in times of economic challenge, the benefits of this showcase event will be seen at a local and regional level, and represents a major boost for Sligo’s tourism sector. Our county’s tourism and hospitality sector is second to none, and people travelling to Sligo for the Rally this weekend will receive a warm, traditional Sligo welcome.’
