National Recycling Week

As part of National Recycling Week 2008, Sligo County Council organised a waste management information stand, compost bin sale and composting demonstrations at the Farmers Market, IT Sligo on Saturday morning 11th October.

National Recycling Week aims to encourage householders to make a special effort to recycling more household waste items.  Recent research has shown that while people are improving when it comes to recycling materials from the kitchen and using their recycling bin they are unaware of the materials that can be recycled from other rooms in the house, such as shampoo bottles, cans of dog food, cosmetic bottles and toilet roll inserts.

Speaking at the event, the Environment Awareness Officer said “There was a lot of interest from the public on how and where to dispose of a variety of items.  There was a lot of interest in household composting and it was very encouraging to hear that a lot of the queries were from people already composting and in need of further advise on how to improve the structure of their compost.  Information on the Ballisodare Green Waste Composting Facility was also on display which generated a great deal of interest”.

Nova Gadsy of Wrigglers Worm Farm was exhibiting the ‘Can-o-worms’ worm composting bin which proved very popular especially among young composters!

Some of the Councils environmental initiatives were available from the information stand e.g. Car Tidy Bags to reduce roadside litter, chewing gum-wraps, dog poop-scoops, childrens environmental booklets, posters, pens, pencils and rulers made from recycled materials and a pencil case which was made from a recycled car tyre!

The Environment Officer said that the event was a huge success and one that would be repeated in the run up to Christmas.

Composting Kits which consist of a compost bin, kitchen caddy and booklet guide to composting are available from Council Offices at the subsidised cost of €25.00.
