Mayor Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady has honoured a man she described as ‘A legendary figure in the history of Sligo Rovers.’ The Mayor was speaking at the official opening of the ‘Packie McGowan’ meeting room in the Showgrounds. In her address the Mayor remarked that ‘It is particularly appropriate that this ceremony is being held on Sligo Rovers’ lotto night. Packie was a founding member of the Lotto Committee and he involved himself with great enthusiasm in every aspect of its affairs. Young people in particular were in awe of his sheer dedication, and this admiration was reflected in his enormous sales which were the mainstay of the lotto for many years.’
‘Packie was a ‘character’ in the true sense of the word, and many a story and joke was shared with other members of the lotto crew who have gone to their eternal reward, people like Christy Houze, Johnny Chadda and Dermot McCullough. I think it is a very welcome and fitting gesture by Sligo Rovers to dedicate this room to one of their most faithful servants, and this will ensure his special memory will be honoured by future generations of Sligo Rovers supporters.’
