Borough Council Suspend Public Car Parking Charges in Sligo

At last night’s monthly meeting of the Borough Council, members unanimously agreed to suspend Parking Charges in all Public Car Parks in the Town. The move involves the suspension of “Pay and Display” parking, in all public car parks as and from today, 8th December, 2009.  The suspension will remain in place until 12.00 midnight on 31st December, 2009.

The decision was taken by the Borough Council to help stimulate Christmas shopping in the town.

About 1,258 free car park spaces will be made available during the period. The list of eligible car parks are as follows:

  • Forthill
  • Connaughton Road
  • Wine Street
  • Quay Street
  • Stephen Street
  • Abbey Street
  • St. Anne’s Place
  • Market Place
  • Connaughton Road car park extension (Higgins/Laurel Hill)
  • Showgrounds Car Park
  • Finisklin Road Car Park
  • West Gardens Car Park
  • John F. Kennedy Parade

Parking meters will also display the information and motorists are advised to check the parking meter in the vicinity of where they are parked to ensure free parking applies.

However, motorists have been warned that parking in streets around the town will attract parking charges as normal and those who fail to pay face penalties.
