If you need support or information on training, upskilling, education or enterprise this could be the event for you.

Following the very successful promotions, hosted recently in Enniscrone and Tubbercurry a Further Training, Education and Enterprise Promotion will be held in the Glasshouse Hotel on Wednesday 25 November.

The promotion will run from 4.00pm to 8.00pm and is free of charge to the public.

The event is being organised by the Sligo County Development Board in conjunction with FÁS, County Sligo VEC, Sligo LEADER Partnership and the Institute of Technology Sligo and up to 20 Government bodies/agencies will have stands at the event to give advice in confidence.

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Councillor Gerry Murray, expects a high level of interest in the initiative.

“This promotion will be of great benefit to people who have recently lost their jobs or working reduced hours.  People will be able to explore the many options available to them in terms of training, education and new business opportunities.  Now, more than ever, it is important that people are aware of the range of excellent supports available to them and I think this initiative will be very well received by the people of Sligo.”

The Chairman of the County Development Board, Councillor Tony McLoughlin, sees the active involvement of up to 20 key agencies pivotal to the success of the initiative.

“I believe the people of Sligo will benefit from this opportunity to engage with the Sligo County Development Board member organisations and obtain advice and support to explore the many options available to them in terms of Training, Education and business support.”

Said Sligo County Council’s Director of Services for Community, Enterprise, Arts and the Environment, Rita McNulty:

“At a time when local enterprises are facing unprecedented challenges, I believe people will benefit from the opportunity to engage with the agencies and to obtain advice and information.  Sligo is acknowledged as the key centre of economic growth in the Northwest, and it is important that we provide the necessary supports to facilitate new and potential enterprise.”

Shaun Purcell, CEO of County Sligo VEC, commented that:

“The success of these promotions is that they are a co-ordinated collaborative response to the needs of the community.  As educational providers we continue to respond to the educational needs of the people of Sligo both in terms of upskilling for people in employment and in providing courses for people who have recently been made redundant.  The key here is creating opportunities and confidence.”

Niall McEvoy, Head of Innovation, in the Institute of Technology in Sligo commented that:

“We all know the current economic climate is very challenging.  Every challenge is also an opportunity. Now is a good time to refresh your skills or consider setting up a business. The Innovation Centre at IT Sligo is a one stop shop where you can discuss your career plans and information on this as well as from other enterprise and educational agencies will be available on Wednesday evening in the Glasshouse Hotel.”

Michael Glennon, Sligo LEADER Partnership, sees the Promotion as:

“An ideal opportunity to find out first hand what supports are available to you if you want to start your own business.  It will be of particular interest to those who recently lost their jobs and now want to become self employed.  Information on the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance will also be available on the day.”

Marie Gallagher, Manager of FÁS Training Services in Sligo stated that:

“This initiative of an inter agency approach to training, education and enterprise is important in developing the Region for the future and that we have people who have the relevant skills and knowledge going forward.  We have to prepare people for the future when the uplift in the economy comes and we have to be ready for the uplift.”
