Mayor and Cathaoirleach Promote Culture Night


Mayor Councillor Jim McGarry and Cathaoirleach Councillor Gerry Murray have urged the people of Sligo to come out and enjoy the many events taking place around the town on Culture Night, Friday 25th September. The Mayor and Cathaoirleach attended a Media Launch to promote the fifty free events being hosted around Sligo.

Come and enjoy a late FREE night of culture for all the family!

In Sligo a record number of 30 cultural venues will open their doors for Culture Night including The Blue Raincoat Theatre Company, The Model Satellite Space, The Hawk's Well Theatre, Sligo Art Gallery, The Cat and The Moon Gallery, County Sligo Youth Theatre, the Yeats Memorial Building, Johnston Court Shopping Centre, Tobergal Lane Cafe, the Institute of Technology Fine Art and Performing Art departments, Bus Eireann Sligo Station and much more. 

While visitors move from venue to venue with their Bag of Culture which can be collected at any one of the three information points, they can experience the exhilaration of live performances, music and colourful acts on the streets and open spaces by the wonderful Workhouse Arts Studios larger than life characters dancing to the beats of the Samboeire drummers.

Other events include 10 minute Yoga workshops in the Factory Performance Space, young people's multimedia shows along the hording around the Model on the Mall an in the Wolf on Arm Studios on Wolf Tone Street, Tea and cupcakes with the exhibiting artists in the Sligo Art Gallery, ceramics and sculpture at the Area 4 Artist Studios, live art and DJing in the Factory Courtyard on Lower Quay Street, music and art in Johnston Court Shopping Centre.

On the night all ages will have the opportunity to create light sculptures on the massive windows of the Glasshouse Hotel with artists Tinka Bechert and Lisa Vandegridft Davala and Vanya Ward, make your own mono-print in about 30 minutes in Joyn Arts Studios on Charles Street, go backstage at the Hawk’s Well and learn of new lighting techniques, follow the artcrawl09 organised by the newly established Sligo Local Artists Movement! (SLAM!) starting from the Northside Resource Centre at 6pm and weaving to new art spaces from there and if you have never tried it before now is your chance to try your hand at cuban or african drumming in the courtyard space on Lower Quay Street.

The Model are opening their doors of the Satellite Space on Castle Street to a new exhibition and hosting a collage party for all to come. They will announce details of where musicians 'Beautiful Unit' will play live that evening. The Yeats Society are screening a one hour biographical film on the post WB Yeats called 'Cast a Cold Eye' at 8pm, with readings for children and a late night talk for adults on the great poet. The Walking tour and talk of Sligo starts on Wine Street at 6.30pm and finishes up in the IT with a talk on the 19th century watercolour paintings of Innismurray Island.

The atmosphere will be jazzed up in Tobergal Lane with Karl Burthom and Stan Burns followed late into the night with The Bughouse Band, Mood Indigo will perform live in the bar upstairs the Glasshouse amid the drawing on the city event, a student band will rock the stage at the main entrance to the IT, Sligo and DJ’s BC and Perdro will spin tunes in Aiden & Ciarán’s garage on Lower Quay Street.

And remember, all events are free and doors are wide open even for the workshops in the joy of theatre, yoga, sculpture, mono-printing, life drawing, graphic design and performance workshops. Bookings are required for some of the workshops so check the brochure for details. 

To help visitors move into Sligo on the night, Bus Eireann Sligo are providing extra bus services and discounted rates on three of their routes. Catch the International Choral Choir on the Strandhill bus, traditional singers circle on the Cliffoney / Grange bus and a contemporary traditional group on the Sligo Live route from Rosses Point. Sligo's first ever Culture Night is a hugely important event providing people with the opportunity to discover and enjoy the rich cultural offering of the town's cultural venues at night.
