Mayor Visits Sligo Education Centre

Mayor Jim McGarry visited Sligo Education Centre recently and met with the over sixty primary teachers who were participating on various Summer In-service Courses. Sligo Education Centre runs a number of Summer Courses for Teachers throughout the Summer. These courses are funded through the Department of Education and Science and run for a week. The topics being covered this Summer include the following:

• Archaeology,
• Information Technology,
• Special Needs,
• Social Environmental
• Scientific Education,
• Music,
• Arts,
• Digital Media,
• Development of the Child and Health and Safety.

The Director, Mary Hough said that the Summer course programme forms an integral and important part of the Continuous Professional Development of teachers. “Teachers are challenged constantly to meet the ever changing needs of their pupils and it is essential that they are given access to high quality inservice on a continuous basis” she said.

Mayor McGarry complimented the teachers for giving of their time during what should be their holidays to engage in the courses. He commented on how the courses did not just benefit the teachers themselves, but more importantly on how it was their pupils who ultimately benefit from having teachers who are constantly upskilling themselves. Mayor McGarry even tried his hand at some of the activities on offer!
