Councillor Jimmy McGarry Elected Mayor

Councillor Jimmy McGarry was elected Mayor of Sligo at Sligo Borough Council’s AGM in City Hall on 15th June. Councillor Jude Devins was elected Deputy Mayor.

Councillor McGarry previously held the post of Mayor in 1990, and in his inaugural address in the Council Chamber he said it was an honour to be elected for the second time as Sligo’s First Citizen. ‘These are challenging times for Sligo, and now more than ever we need effective local leadership. As a Council we deliver when we work together as a team, and I regard it as a privilege to be able to do something positive for the people of Sligo.’

The Mayor continued ‘I will represent Sligo to the best of my ability. There are a number of key issues I will focus on in my term; I see it as a priority to retain acute services in Sligo General Hospital. In the area of employment, we should bring forward elements of the National Development Plan, particularly in relation to job-intensive projects. We need investment in employment, infrastructure and community development, and I will be prioritising these areas over the course of my term as Mayor
