Mayor Honours Dr Henry

Mayor Councillor Veronica Cawley recently hosted a reception to honour well known Sligo physician Dr. Paddy Henry. The reception was attended by Dr. Henry and his family, elected members of the borough council , local TD John Perry and former colleague Dr. Jimmy Devins, TD, friends and staff of Sligo Borough Council.

Dr Paddy Henry qualified as a doctor at the Royal College of surgeons in 1953.  He served his internship with distinction in what was then known as the charitable infirmary in Jervis Street, Dublin and was a gold medal prize winner in both medicine and surgery. In recognition of these awards his name is included in the Role of Honour in Jervis Street Hospital.

Dr. Henry has also attracted deserved acclaim as an author and through his published works he has given us some fascinating and often amusing insights into the world of medicine. In 1995 he published ‘A History of Sligo Medical Care 1800-1965’ which has been acclaimed as a valuable record of the development of medical care in Sligo over the last 40 years. Then in 1998 he published the more popularly known ‘The Healing Power of Humour’ which reflects Dr. Henry’s positive and engaging outlook on life.

Mayor Cawley was delighted to have the opportunity to pay tribute to Dr. Henry for his many years of impeccable service to the community as she commented that ‘too seldom, as a community do we honour people who have given special service to our community.’ The mayor also made a special presentation to Dr. Henry as recognition of his work down through the years.

Dr. Henry said he was humbled by this special occasion and that it was his honour to serve the people of Sligo. He felt he had been very fortunate in his life to have family and friends who supported him throughout his career which is maybe best summarized through his writing ‘how fortunate I was in the parents I have had and the brothers and sisters they gave me; the continued good fortune that enabled me to meet and marry Mary; the priceless gift of our three children; my forty plus years as a member of a very noble profession and the enduring friendships that derived from that. Whoever first advised us all to count our blessings was wise indeed. In my case they have been countless.’
