The Special meeting was convened for the purpose of considering a motion to confer on Mr. Seamus Finn, former editor of the Sligo Champion, the Freedom of the Borough of Sligo.
On the invitation of the Borough Council the attendance included Seamus’ wife Sheila, his son Seamus, family members, Freemen, Former Mayors and other invited guests.
It was proposed by Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady seconded by Councillor Matt Lyons and unanimously agreed
“That the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Sligo be and is hereby conferred upon Mr. Seamus Finn and that his name be entered on the Roll of Honorary Freemen of the Borough of Sligo pursuant to the provisions of the Local Government Act 1991”.
It has seemed fitting to us that Seamus Finn be enrolled in the Roll of Freeman of the Borough in recognition of his outstanding career in the print media as a newspaper editor, his unwavering commitment to the highest standards of journalism, and his exemplary contribution to local causes.
Mr. Seamus Finn then signed the Roll of Freemen and was presented by the Mayor with a certificate of enrolment in the Roll of Freemen of the Borough of Sligo and with a painting of a scene at Rosses Point by local artist Anne Osborne.
Mr. Finn then addressed the meeting and thanked the Council for the honour it had bestowed on him.
This concluded the business of the meeting which ended at 8.45pm.
