The minutes of the meeting held on 8th October 2007 having been circulated were adopted on the proposal of Councillor S Mac Manus seconded by Councillor Mc Loughlin.
The County Managers report was noted and following a discussion it was agreed that the financing/resourcing of the Joint Policing Committee would be discussed at a Borough Council Meeting.
On the proposal of Councillor J Mc Goldrick, seconded by Cllr A Gibbons it was unanimously agreed “That the Joint Policing Committee of Sligo Borough Council seek legal advice in relation to the implementation of a policy of banning of illegal dogs within the Borough of Sligo.”
Superintendent Barrett circulated a report which dealt generally with crime in the district especially theft, public order, crime prevention measures and with measures aimed at combating such activities.
Following a discussion on the proposal of Councillor J Mc Goldrick, seconded by Mr. S O Boyle it was unanimously agreed “That Sligo Borough Council and the Joint Policing Committee investigate the implementation of Bye-Laws in relation to the closing times of Fast Food outlets”
On the proposal of Councillor V. Cawley, seconded by Mr. S O Boyle it was agreed “That a sub-committee of the Joint Policing Committee be set up to examine the problems associated with the late closures of fast food outlets and to make recommendations to the Joint Policing Committee.”
Councillor C. MacManus proposed, Councillor S. MacManus seconded and it was unanimously agreed “That An Garda Siochana submits to this JPC a general report on cocaine usage in the Sligo Sub-Division Operational Area, including seizures, arrests and convictions. Further to ask what are the statutory agencies responses, local or state-wide, to combating increased usage of this substance.” The Members also indicated that the report should include all forms of illegal drugs and should give comparative statistics for the last three quarter years.
Councillor C. MacManus proposed, Councillor S. MacManus seconded and it was unanimously agreed “That Sligo Joint Policing Committee, in conjunction with An Garda Siochana in Sligo, organise a series of at least four public meetings for local communities in Sligo City. These meetings will be held to foster better communications, understanding and community relations and will allow both local people and senior Gardai discuss and address mutual concerns in relation to various matters, in particular, anti-social behaviour and the scourge of drug abuse.” It was also agreed to include a add St. Josephs Community Hall as a fifth venue.
Councillor A. Gibbons proposed, Councillor C. MacManus seconded and it was unanimously agreed “That An Garda Siochana would be extra vigilant in combating the illegal parking on footpaths. This illegal parking has been an ongoing problem in the Sligo Urban area creating a dangerous nuisance to all but specifically wheelchair users, the blind, visually impaired, Senior citizens and parents with prams"
Councillor A. Gibbons proposed, Councillor C. MacManus seconded and it was unanimously agreed “That An Garda Siochana would be extra vigilant in apprehending those involved in the theft and vandalising of the lifebuoys along the Garavogue River and that all such offenders would be prosecuted"
Councillor A. Gibbons proposed, Councillor C. MacManus seconded and it was unanimously agreed “That An Garda Siochana would assist Sligo Borough Council’s efforts to reduce the illegal littering problem in Sligo by being extra vigilant on patrol and to treat this illegal practice as a crime"
