The congratulations of the Council was extended to the following:
The Innisfree Ceili Band on winning first prize in the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil and also the Dartry Ceili Band on coming second in the same competition and the Fred Finn Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann and the many other prize winners from Sligo at the Fleadh.
Sligo County Council on their handling of the recent water crisis in particular Sligo Fire Brigade.
Mr. Leo Gray of the Champion office staff on winning the McNamee award for journalism.
Brigadier General Gerry Hegarty on his promotion to General Officer Commanding the Western Command.
Mr. Anthony Skeffington, SEE, on his recent engagement.
On the proposal of Councillor Bree seconded by Councillor McGoldrick Minutes of July Monthly meeting of the 7th July and July General Purposes meeting o 21st July were unanimously adopted and signed by the Mayor. On the proposal of Councillor Bree seconded by Councillor Gibbons Minutes of Programme 4.5.8 Committee meeting of 24th July 2008 were approved with the following amendment:
‘That the decision regarding the provision of grant aid for Christmas Lighting be deferred to allow the Chamber of Commerce to submit requested documentation to the Programme 4.5.8 Sub-Committee and that all other recommendations of the Sub Committee as contained in the minutes of the meeting of 24th July be approved’.
The Director of Services informed Councillors that a report will be available for the October Meeting of the Council.
The Town Clerk agreed to circulate a letter to Councillors received from Mr. Michael Finneran T.D. Minister for Housing Urban Renewal and Developing Areas regarding voluntary housing capital funding schemes.
Councillor Bree requested and it was unanimously agreed to take his motion no. 43 on the agenda of 27/8/08 before item no. 3 on agenda of 27/8/2008. Councillor Bree proposed and Councillor McManus seconded and it was unanimously agreed:
‘That this Council expresses its grave disappointment at the Government’s decision to cut back the allocation for the Council’s Disabled Persons and Essential Repairs Grant Schemes and Housing Adoption Grant Schemes for Older People and People with a Disability and further the Council calls on the Government and the Department of the Environment to immediately provide the necessary funding to allow the Council to grant aid applications who are deemed eligible for assistance under the various Housing Grant Schemes’.
Councillor McLoughlin proposed and Councillor David Cawley seconded and it was unanimously agreed:
‘That Sligo Borough demand a meeting with the Minister Mr. Michael Finneran TD regarding the shortfall of Disabled Persons Grant aid and Essential Repairs Grant Schemes and Housing Adoption Grant Scheme for older people and people with a disability with the view to providing funding in the current year 2008’.
Mr. G. Cannon, Senior Executive Engineer outlined the new grant scheme as it stands at present.
A report to the AO Housing dated 26/8/2008 had been circulated with agenda. On the proposal of Councillor Sean MacManus seconded by Councillor McGoldrick it was unanimously agreed to note this report.

Councillor McGarry proposed and Councillor David Cawley seconded and it was unanimously agreed
‘That Sligo Borough Council request the Department of the Environment to commit the necessary funding to their 2009 Housing Budget to ensure that the Maugheraboy Housing Scheme goes ahead’.
The Town Clerk outlined the present position on proposed developments in Town Centre Masterplan.
Councillor Gibbons proposed and it was unanimously agreed to defer motions no.’s 5, 17, 18, 28, 30, 32 for agenda of 27/8/2008.
Councillor MacSharry proposed and Councillor McLoughlin seconded and it was unanimously agreed
‘That Sligo Borough Council request the Management of Bus Eireann extend the Sligo town bus route to include and service Tonaphubble, to the turntable at Cairns Road which would service Heatherview, Innisfree Court, Meadowvale and residents in the local vicinity’.
Councillor MacSharry proposed and Councillor D Cawley seconded and it was unanimously agreed
‘That Sligo Borough Council clean the Lady Erin statue as a significant and prominent piece of heritage and undertake whatever minor restoration works that need to be done’.
The SEE Roads informed Councillors that specialist contractors should be starting work to restore statue at the end of September.
Councillor D. Cawley proposed and Councillor McLoughlin seconded and it was agreed with Councillor Gibbons abstaining
‘That Sligo Borough Council consider the removal of the existing war memorial at Pearse Road and identify suitable alternative site options for it to be placed at the proposed museum site in the ‘Cultural Quarter’ Development at Connaughton Road’.
It was agreed to write to the Committee seeking clarification of ownership, and responsibility.
Councillor McGarry proposed and Councillor V. Cawley seconded and it was unanimously agreed
‘That Sligo Borough Council put a speed ramp at St. Brendan’s School, Cartron’.
Councillor Gibbons proposed and Councillor McGarry seconded and it was unanimously agreed
‘That this Borough Council calls on the Minister of the Environment and Local Government to implement a full restructure of the Elector of Registers where the PPS number is the sole basis that the register of electors is compiled and that adequate funding is supplied to each local authority to implement this process a copy of this motion to be sent to all local authorities within the State’.
Councillor McGarry proposed and Councillor Gibbons seconded and it was unanimously agreed
‘That Sligo Borough Council requests Cluid Housing Association to provide a gate to lower entrance at Glendallon Estate.’
