The Special meeting was convened for the purpose of considering a motion to confer on Mr. Michael Flatley the Freedom of the Borough of Sligo.
On the invitation of the Borough Council the attendance included members and friends of Mr. Flatley, Freemen, Former Mayors and other invited guests.
It was proposed by Cllr. McGoldrick seconded by Cllr. O’Grady and unanimously agreed “That the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Sligo be and is hereby conferred upon Mr. Michael Flatley and that his name be entered on the Roll of Honorary Freemen of the Borough of Sligo pursuant to the provisions of the Local Government Act 1991”.
It has seemed fitting to us that the name of Michael Flatley be enrolled in the Roll of Freemen of the Borough of Sligo in recognition of his genius as a dancer and as an entertainer; because he has called world attention and acclaim to Irish tradition and culture; because he has loyally and consistently acknowledged his Sligo ancestry and because he has brought honour to himself, to Sligo and to Ireland.
Mr. Michael Flatley then signed the Roll of Freemen and was presented by the Mayor with a certificate of enrolment in the Roll of Freemen of the Borough of Sligo and with an engraved piece of crystal.
Mr. Flatley then addressed the meeting and thanked the Council for the honour it had bestowed on him.
This concluded the business
