The sympathy of the Council was extended to the following ; The Lee and Teape Families, on the death of their granddaughter Siofra Teape The French Family, St Josephs Terrace on the death of Mrs Aggie French The Cox Family, Jinks Avenue on the death of Mr Paddy Cox The Collery Family, Thornhill on the death of Mrs. Ann Taaffe. Cllr Aiden Collery and the Collery Family on the death of Mrs. Rita Collery.
All the members joined in the expression of sympathy.
The congratulations of the Council was extended to Mr. Michael Curley on his election as National President of the Community Games.
The Meeting adjourned for 15 minutes as a mark of respect and resumed at 8.30 pm.
The minutes of the March Monthly Meeting of 3rd March 2008 were adopted unanimously and signed by the Mayor:
On the proposal of Councillor S. MacManus seconded by Councillor D. Cawley it was unanimously resolved to fix the date of the Annual General Meeting for 23rd June 2008.
Following a discussion concerning the Draft Cemetery Bye Laws the following matters were agreed:-
On the proposal of Councillor Bree seconded by Councillor Mac Sharry it was unanimously resolved that ‘’ In Paragraph 9 delete 2.00 pm and insert 4.00 pm. To read ‘’ Funeral Processions shall arrive at the Cemetery no later than 4.00 pm on Monday to Sunday’.
On the proposal of Councillor Mc Garry seconded by Councillor Bree it was unanimously resolved that ‘’Item 10 on page 3 of the Draft Cemetery Bye Laws be amended to delete the words Authorised Contractors and replaced them with the words Approved Contractors and that a definition of approved contractors be inserted at the commencement of the Bye Laws — as follows Approved Contractor means a contractor who may be assigned to carry out grave digging services in an emergency situation.’’
On the proposal of Councillor V Cawley seconded by Councillor Mc Garry it was unanimously resolved that ‘’ A bye law be included as part of the Draft Cemetery Bye Laws 2008 include the following That where burial plots are found by SBC staff to be a danger to the public by way of broken headstones or kerbs or collapsed graves. That SBC have the right to make the plot safe and secure in the interest of Health and Safety’’.
It was also agreed that the council would recoup the full cost of running the Cemetery from fees within a period of four years.
It was noted that this item was on the agenda prematurely and it was agreed to defer it until such time as discussions with the residents were concluded.
The Mayor asked to be excused from the meeting at 9.15 pm and the deputy Mayor Councillor Bree took the Chair.
Following a discussion concerning Litter Management in the Borough of Sligo it was agreed that the Litter Management plan would be reviewed.
The Members noted the report submitted by the Town Clerk in this matter.
This concluded the business of the meeting which ended at 10.35 pm
