Minutes of Annual Meeting of Sligo Borough Council held on Monday, 23rd June 2008, at 12.00 noon in the Council Chamber, City Hall, Sligo

At the outset the Councillors and the Director of Services paid tribute to the outgoing Mayor, Cllr. McGoldrick and complimented him on the way in which he carried out his Mayoral duties during the past year. The Mayor thanked the Councillors and staff for their help and cooperation during his term of office.

Tributes were also paid to the Deputy Mayor Cllr. Bree.

1. ELECTION OF MAYOR

Cllr. McGarry proposed and Cllr. Devins seconded that Cllr. Veronica Cawley be elected Mayor of Sligo.

Cllr. Sean MacManus proposed and Cllr. Chris MacManus seconded that Cllr. Gibbons be elected Mayor of Sligo

A poll was taken which resulted as follows :


For Cllr. V. Cawley:

Cllr. Bree, Cllr. D. Cawley, Cllr. V. Calwey Cllr. Devins, Cllr. McGarry, Cllr. McGoldrick, Cllr. McLoughlin, Cllr. MacSharry, Cllr. O’Grady (9)


For Cllr. Gibbons:

Cllr. Gibbons, Cllr. C. MacManus, Cllr. S. MacManus (3)

The Mayor declared “That Cllr. Veronica Cawley be and is hereby elected to the office of Mayor of Sligo from 23rd June 2008 to the annual meeting to be held on such day in 2009 as falls to be determined allowance to be at a rate of € 37,500 per annum”

Cllr. Veronica Cawley then took the chair and thanked her proposer, seconder and colleagues for electing her Mayor. The Members and the Director of Services congratulated Cllr. Cawley on her election as Mayor and wished her every success in her year in office.

2. ELECTION OF DEPUTY MAYOR

Cllr. O. Grady proposed and Cllr. Bree seconded that Cllr. Devins be elected Deputy Mayor.

Cllr. Gibbons proposed and Cllr. S. MacManus seconded that Cllr. C. MacManus be elected Deputy Mayor.

A poll was taken with resulted as follows:


For Cllr. Devins :

Cllr. Bree, Cllr. D. Cawley, Cllr. V. Cawley, Cllr. Devins, Cllr. McGarry, Cllr. McGoldrick, Cllr. McLoughlin, Cllr. MacSharry, Cllr. O’Grady (9)


For Cllr. C. MacManus:

Cllr. Gibbons, Cllr. C. MacManus, Cllr. S. MacManus (3)

The Mayor then declared “That Cllr. Devins be and is hereby elected to the office of Deputy Mayor of Sligo from 23rd June 2008 to the annual meeting to be held on such day in 2009 as falls to be determined allowance to be at a rate of € 9,375 per annum”

3. NOMINATION OF 3 DIRECTORS TO THE SLIGO NORTH WEST AIRPORT COMPANY LIMITED

Cllr. C. MacManus proposed and Cllr. D. Cawley seconded and it was unanimously agreed “That we hereby elect :

  • Cllr. Jonathan McGoldrick
  • Cllr. Tony McLoughlin
  • Cllr. Sean MacManus

to be Directors of the Sligo North West Airport Company Limited for the ensuing year”

4. NOMINATION OF ONE MEMBER AS REPRESENTATIVE ON THE BORDER REGIONAL AUTHORITY OPERATIONAL COMMITTEE

Cllr. S. MacManus proposed, Cllr. McLoughlin seconded and it unanimously agreed

“That we hereby nominate and appoint Cllr. Veronic Cawley to membership of the Border Regional Authority Operational Committee.

5. NOMINATION OF TWO MEMBERS TO SLIGO HARBOUR ADVISORY GROUP

Cllr. Devins proposed and Cllr. C. MacManus seconded and it was unanimously agreed

“That we hereby nominate and appoint the following to membership of the Sligo Harbour Advisory Group Cllr. Jonathan McGoldrick and Cllr. Veronica Cawley”

6. FILLING OF ONE VACANCY ON THE ACCESS COMMITTEE

Cllr. McGoldrick proposed, Cllr. O’Grady seconded and it was unanimously agreed

“That we hereby nominate and appoint the following to fill a vacancy on the Sligo Access Committee Cllr. Chris MacManus”

7. VOTE OF SYMPATHY

The sympathy of the Council was extended to the following:

Cllr. A. Gibbons and the Shannon and Hamilton Families on the death of Mrs Adelaide Hamilton, 15 Cairns Drive, Sligo.

Mrs Teresa Mulvihill and Family, 4 Hanley Terrace, Maugheraboy on the death of her husband Mr Kevin Mulvihill.

Ms Eilish Barrett and Family on the death of her mother Mrs Rose Barrett, Ballisodare

8. CONGRATULATIONS

The Congratulations of the Council were extended to the following:

Fr Dominic Gilhooly, St. Annes on the Golden Jubilee of his ordination to the Priesthood.

Coolera / Strandhill underage Hurling team on winning the Féile.

Ms Lucy Brennan, Assistant Foreperson, Parks Department, Sligo Borough Council on winning the Cork City Marathon.


This concluded the business of the meeting which ended at 1.20 pm.
